Affect labeling can also help you reframe your emotions, applying less judgmental descriptions to them. Whereas you might be flat-out angry at how stuck you’re feeling, the reframed, less negative way to put it would be that you’re feeling “emotional intensity gone awry.” And rather than being annoyed by your frustration, you can see it as a “signal to change.” This isn’t only semantics. And it’s different from taking a deep breath before acting or responding—common advice for calming your emotions. Taking the proverbial deep breath is an act of suppression, but introducing the idea of possibility—simply saying getting unstuck is possible—is progression, or forward thinking, so to speak. And it is an all-important first step. Many studies have demonstrated that reframing emotions calms the amygdala, the brain’s anxiety processor; reframing trumps suppressing them when you’re trying to reduce stress.
